Flutterby FUNdraisers Meet Consortium Scientists and Present Cheque for £18,000

Flutterby_FUNdraisers_Logo.jpgOn Saturday 3rd October, the UKCFGTC’s gene therapy group at the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine (IGMM, University of Edinburgh) was delighted to welcome thirteen supporters of the Flutterby FUNdraisers.

The visit started with two short presentations outlining the work carried out by the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium, including the recent multidose trial and current work on viral vectors.

To provide an insight into practical lab work, the visitors were given the opportunity to extract DNA from strawberries, an activity which provided much entertainment.

This was followed by a well-received series of demonstrations from lab members explaining molecular biology techniques including immunological analysis of cells brushed from noses, polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing, gel electrophoresis and fluorescent microscopy.

The visit concluded with an informal lunch and a photo opportunity at which the UKCFGTC were presented with a generous donation of £18,000 raised at Flutterby FUNdraiser events.
